East Swim and Dive opens 2023 season with wins over Great Valley



The girls' and boys' teams defeated Great Valley HS at home to open up the winter season. The girls won by a score of 96-74. Captain Reya Petrick picked up the win in the 50 freestyle (27.34) and Freshman Whitney Kane added a win in the 100 Fly (1:05.31) Sophomore Ava Sgarra was the runner-up in the 500 Free with a District 1 consideration cut of 5:28.54 and added a second cut in the 100 Breast (1:12.15.) The Lady Cougars' relay teams were impressive with wins in the 200 Medley (Lucille Obenski, Sgarra, Aubrey Wilson & Ellie Reese - 1:59.57) and they out touched GV in the 400 Free Relay (Reya Petrick, Reese, Obenski, Kane - 4:02.55.) The 200 Free Relay Teams swept the event with the winning team of Reya Petrick, Kane, Hayley Heckler & Sgarra (1:50.49) followed closely by the Freshman squad of Kayla Terry, Chloe Carroll, Riley Petrick & Chelsea Nguyen (1:53.71.) In diving, Rachel Laraio, Courtney Jefferis & Lauren Mohan finished 1, 2 & 3 with strong exhibition scores from Freshmen Joya Mentrikoski & Jillian Fuchs. Laraio finished less than 5 points from her own team record.


The boys outpaced Great Valley by a score of 101-74 and picked up several District 1 consideration cuts in the first meet of the year. The 200 Medley Relay team of Jack Thompson, Matt DiAddezio, Sam Sperling and Gabe Carroll touched first with a district consideration cut of 1:41.63. The same quartet (Carroll, Sperling, DiAddezio & Thompson) also finished 1st in the 200 Free Relay with Carroll turning in a District consideration 50 Free lead-off split of 22.87. Carroll would later add a 100 Free split consideration cut of 50.53 during the 400 Free Relay and a third consideration cut in 100 Fly (55.85.) Thompson also picked up a win and a consideration cut in the 50 Free (22.70) Other individual event winners included Lucas Respicio in the 100 Breast (1:07.49) Andrew Fulton in the 200 Free (1:54.99,) Joseph Zeng in the 100 Free (54.51) and Niall Richards in the dive event (75.65)


The East team returns to the Lionville YMCA pool on December 6th to take on Kennett HS at 3:30PM.
