DEHS Swim & Dive takes on Rustin

In the toughest meet of the season so far, the Men and Women's Teams took on Rustin in their home pool on Wednesday afternoon.


The women's team had a strong showing with lots of personal bests and new cuts for the SECM League Championship meet. The Medley relays took 2nd and 3rd place; Reya Petrick placed 2nd in the 200 Free while Whitney Kane took 2nd in the 200 Medley and the 100 Free. In the 50 Free Lucille Obenski and Riley Petrick out touched Rustin for 2nd and 3rd. Ava Sgarra was the team's lone individual event winner in the 100 Fly. Ellie Reese picked up the 2nd place finish in the 500 Free. The ladies turned on the heat for the 200 Free Relay with a first place finish from the team of Reya Petrick, Kane, Sgarra and Ellie Reese. Obenski turned in a 2nd place finish in the 100 Back as did Sgarra for the 100 Breast. The 400 Free Relay hung in for a 2nd place finish as well. Rounding out the competition, the divers dominated in their event with 1st, 3rd and 4th place finishes for Rachel Laraio (260.10,) Avery Surden (205.15) and Jillian Fuchs (196.05.) The Ladies unfortunately lost the meet 99-87. Congratulations to Rachel Laraio who set a new school record, breaking the one she set earlier this season.


The boys started off strong with a win from the 200 Medley team of Sammy Engle, Matt DiAddezio, Leo Wu and Connor Kiebort. In the 200 Free, Andrew Fulton and Jack Thompson finished 1st and 2nd; Sam Sperling picked up the win in the 200 IM and earned a District Consideration time of 2:05.34, while DiAddezio and Engle rounded out the points in the event. In the 50 Free, Gabe Carroll, Kiebort and Leo Wu took 2, 3 and 4 while Sperling would go on to win the 100 Free with Charles O'Hara and Joseph Zeng close behind. Fulton continues to dominate in the 500 Free and the 200 Free relay teams took 2nd and 3rd to stay ahead in points. Engle provided a 2nd place finish in the backstroke and DiAddezio and Thompson finished out the individual events with a 1,2 finish in Breaststroke. Boys 400 Relay team of Carroll, Sperling, DiAddezio and Thompson turned in a season best 3:29.80 and the boys enjoyed a win over Rustin (94-82) and move to 7-0 for the season.


Congratulations to our athletes of the meet, nominated by their Coaches: Rachel Laraio, Ellie Reese and Paul Gately! The Cougars are back in action Friday 2/2 at WCAY for their third meet of the week against Henderson.
