East swim and dive District meet recap

Downingtown East begins a successful post-season campaign with both swimmers and divers having a great start!

The East divers kicked off the post-season with three divers qualifying for the PIAA district one meet. Mitch Goldman finished 13th, Jack Hackett was 16th and freshman Rachel Laraio finished 15th. This was the first time East has had divers at the District meet since 2017.

The East boys team took 6 swimmers to the meet this season. The 200 medley relay of Jack Thompson, Matt DiAddezio, George Liu, and Gabe Carroll improved on their seed time and placed 19th. The 200 free relay of Carroll, Liu, Thompson, and Luke Sperling finished 24th. Carroll, who was the only individual boys' qualifier, finished 37th in the 50 free and 28th in the 100 free with a personal best time.

The girls kicked off the meet with a 6th place finish in the 200 medley relay. The quartet of Victoria Maki, Finley Mulhern, Cady Kiebort, and Alexa Fulton turned in a season-best time to make the podium and possibly earn a PIAA state berth (that will be determined next weekend after the other PA districts have their meets). The same four swam to a 9th place finish in the 200 Free relay which narrowly missed a podium finish. Fulton won both the 50 and 100 freestyle events, breaking the District and school record in the 50 free and also earning the District High Point trophy. Maki placed 11th in the 200 free and 15th in the 100 free with a personal best time, while Kiebort placed 26th in the 100 fly.

Overall, the girls finished 9th in the 40+ team competition, while the boys placed 30th.

Next up is the PIAA state meet at Bucknell University. Alexa Fulton is currently the only individual qualifier in the 50 and 100 free. The other swimmers and relays will need to wait until the at large bids are announced in one week.

Go East!!!
